Filing an Insurance Claim for Storm Damage

When severe storms hit, homeowners are often left with damaged windows and doors – and countless questions about the insurance claim process. After helping many Colorado and Nebraska homeowners through these situations, we understand the confusion and uncertainty you might be feeling.

Storm damage claims don’t have to be the nightmare most people expect. There are proven approaches to making the system work for you, not against you.

First 24 Hours: Damage Control

When the storm passes, time matters. Here’s what to do:

Walk your property with your phone’s camera ready. Document everything—broken glass, damaged frames, water on windowsills. The insurance company’s first question will be “when did this happen?” Fresh documentation answers that question definitively.

Don’t clean up too quickly. While you should tarp or board up broken windows to prevent further damage, leave the evidence visible until it’s been properly documented by both you and professionals.

Look beyond the obvious damage. That hairline crack in your window frame might seem minor, but it can compromise the entire window’s seal and function. Water intrusion around windows often signals bigger problems that aren’t immediately visible.

Pro tip: Take video that captures the sound of rattling glass or sticky door operation. These functional issues are just as important as visible damage.

Getting the Right Inspection

Your insurance company’s adjuster is just one piece of the puzzle. Many adjusters are handling multiple claims after a major storm and may not have time for the most thorough inspection.

That’s why having your own professional assessment matters so much.

When our team inspects storm-damaged windows and doors, we’re looking at:

  • Seal integrity around the entire frame
  • Hardware function that may be compromised
  • Glass damage beyond obvious cracks
  • Frame warping that affects operation
  • Water infiltration patterns that reveal hidden issues

We document everything with detailed photos and notes that speak directly to what insurance adjusters are looking for. This professional documentation often makes the difference between a denied claim and a fully covered repair.

Filing Your Claim (Without the Headaches)

Insurance companies count on most homeowners not knowing the details of their coverage. Here’s what you need to know:

Time limits are real. Most policies require you to report damage within a specific timeframe. Missing this window could affect your coverage.

How you describe the damage matters. Using precise terminology rather than general descriptions can change how your claim is categorized and covered.

Your claim number is important. Keep track of this number, as every communication about your claim will require it, and losing track of it can cause delays.

When you work with our team, we handle this paperwork for you. We’ve filed many of these claims and know exactly what information needs to be provided to avoid delays in your claim processing.

The Adjuster Visit: What You Should Know

When the insurance adjuster arrives, they’re working for the insurance company—not you. Their job is to assess damage, yes, but also to control costs.

Having a window professional present during this visit changes the dynamic completely. Here’s why:

We speak the same language. Insurance adjusters use specific terminology and codes for different types of damage. Our team knows these codes and makes sure your damage is properly categorized.

We can identify overlooked damage. We can point out impacts and issues that might otherwise be missed during a standard inspection.

We document all findings. If there are disagreements about the extent of damage, we document our observations immediately—which helps when addressing discrepancies.

Our customers tell us this part of the process is where they felt most relieved to have professional backup. The adjuster visit often determines whether you’ll get a fair settlement.

Decoding Your Insurance Estimate

The paperwork you receive after a claim inspection can be complex. Most homeowners look at the bottom-line number without understanding what’s actually covered.

When we review insurance estimates with our customers, we look at:

Line-by-line coverage to ensure every damaged component is included Proper scope of work that accounts for necessary repairs, not just cosmetic fixes Material allowances that match current market costs Labor calculations that reflect the actual work required

If we find discrepancies, we handle the supplement process with your insurance company. This isn’t about inflating claims; it’s about making sure you receive the full coverage you’ve been paying for.

Choosing the Right Repair Partner

Once your claim is approved, the real work begins. This is where many homeowners face a critical decision: selecting the right contractor for the job.

Here’s what matters for lasting, quality repairs:

Local experience with similar storm damage Proper licensing and insurance for window and door work Direct relationships with quality manufacturers Experience working within insurance budgets

Our team at Pinnacle specializes in insurance restorations. We understand the unique challenges of matching existing finishes, maintaining architectural integrity, and balancing quality with cost constraints.

The Follow-Through That Matters

The final step in a successful claim is often overlooked: ensuring your insurance company releases the remaining funds once work is complete.

Many policies hold back a portion of your claim amount until work is verified as complete. Our team handles the final documentation and invoicing to make sure this money is released without delay.

We also document the completed work thoroughly—because good records of repairs are valuable for future reference.

You Don’t Have to Navigate This Alone

Storm damage is stressful enough without adding insurance bureaucracy to the mix. The difference between a smooth, fully-covered repair and a frustrating experience often comes down to having the right guide through the process.

Our storm damage specialists are experienced with the claims process. We know the common challenges and, most importantly, how to make sure your home is restored properly after storm damage.

The first step is always the simplest: schedule a free, no-obligation inspection. We’ll assess the damage, explain your options clearly, and help you decide if filing a claim makes sense for your situation.

Your windows and doors are your home’s first line of defense against the elements. Don’t let insurance complexity keep you from protecting them properly.

Had an excellent experience with Pinnacle. I have been working with them for years on various projects, but they just completed a screened in patio for my personal home and I couldn't be happier. On time, clean, clear communication, and the project was done on schedule with no changes. Thrilled beyond belief and will be using them again and again!
Response from the owner:It is such a pleasure to hear from a long time valued partner, and thank you for trusting us with your personal home as well! Our team loves what we do and takes pride in giving our customers exactly what they want. We are thankful you had a wonderful experience.
We recently worked with Pinnacle Windows after the film on our existing windows failed due to the high elevation we live at, leaving them looking cloudy and worn. We ended up replacing 9 windows with three large picture windows, and the difference is incredible.

The team was fantastic to work with—professional, efficient, and detail-oriented. They also replaced our doors and kitchen windows, removing all the grids and upgrading everything to a clean, open look that lets in so much more natural light.

Kenny and the team met with us multiple times and insured we had everything we wanted and more. The finished result truly transformed our space. Everything looks brighter, more modern, and just overall amazing. We’re very happy with the quality of work and would absolutely recommend Pinnacle Windows.
Response from the owner:We are thrilled that your new picture windows and custom door replacements have modernized your space and maximized your natural light. Our team, led by experts like Kenny, is dedicated to detailed, professional restoration and ensuring our customers get exactly what they need—and more. Thank you for recommending Pinnacle Windows & Restoration; we truly appreciate the opportunity to have transformed your home!
I worked primarily with Jacob. He has been over the top in making sure everything is right and going the extra mile. Everyone that I encountered has been super helpful and friendly. The window looks and works great!
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for your review Jim, we appreciate the kind words. We are glad you had a great experience with our team, and we hope you enjoy your windows for many years to come!
Jacob and Team came and looked at a window that no-one else would look at. Angel and Dave installed it and it looks beautiful! So Appreciative. Thanks team!!
Response from the owner:Thank you for your kind review. Our team is passionate about what they do, and times like this shows that. I am glad we could get you taken care of!
We have worked with Pinnacle a ton and have also worked with several other window companies over the years, but Pinnacle has been the best! Nick Battaglia and Chris Trojan specifically have been great!!
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for your review, Adam! Our team really appreciates your kind words, and we look forward to continuing to work together in the future!
Working with Pinnacle Windows has been a really easy, stress free experience and their work and personnel are exceptional. We had our first experience with hail damage last year and a friend recommended Pinnacle Windows. Kaleb came out and inspected our windows and explained the whole process to us. They worked directly with our insurance, sending them (and us) the estimate. They came out and got the work done in one day and even coordinated with other professionals that needed to come in and do other repairs. Everything looks great! We will definitely be using Pinnacle Windows again.
Response from the owner:Thank you so much for sharing your detailed experience with us. We are truly grateful for your kind words and for trusting us with your home after the storm. We know that navigating repairs can be overwhelming, so we are thrilled to hear that you found the process to be a stress-free window replacement experience. Our team, including Kaleb, takes great pride in guiding homeowners through every step, ensuring clarity and peace of mind.
This was my first time dealing with this company and the experience has been great. Jacob was my sales rep and not only was he well mannered and professional. Not once did he make me feel pressured in any way. Great company Would recommend to any one who is looking for a company who is professional and friendly.
Response from the owner:Thank you for your review!
I called this company to get a quote on my window, the salesman was very knowledgeable and I am looking forward to getting my project taken care of.
Response from the owner:Thank you for your kind review, we are thankful you chose us to take of your project!
I had a gentlemen take a look at my 8 windows, was very impressed with his patience and willingness to help me out! Would highly recommend Gunner come take a look at your windows and provide an estimate!
Response from the owner:Thank you for your wonderful feedback! We're so glad to hear that Gunner provided exceptional service while assessing your windows. Whether you're considering window replacement, our team is here to ensure you get the best care and expert advice. Your recommendation means the world to us, and we’re always happy to help with any future window needs!
Excellent job by Pinnacle Windows. Our condo had a very leaky window that leaked very specifically during rain storms.

When Pinnacle came to assess the old window, they saw that it was incorrectly installed in the first place, and was too small, hence the leaking. Unfortunately this was past the statute of limitations for getting money for the correction, but that was not Pinnacle’s fault. I appreciated knowing what the issue was, though.

The replacement fits beautifully, and does not leak. It only took about 4 hours to do the entire deinstall and reinstall. The men who did it were kind and efficient. Great job! Thank you!
Response from the owner:Thank you for sharing your experience with Pinnacle Windows! We're so glad we could help resolve the issue with your leaky window. Identifying the original installation problem and providing a properly fitted window replacement is exactly the kind of care and expertise we strive for. It's great to hear the new window fits beautifully and is leak-free! Our team takes pride in efficient, high-quality work, and we're thrilled you were happy with the results. If you ever need assistance with window restoration or future replacements, we’re here to help!
